The Salt Doll

In a parable told by Sri Ramakrishna, a salt doll sets out to measure the depth of the ocean.

It wants to return
and tell the others how deep it is.

The doll steps into the water.

It goes farther.

And farther.

But as it enters the ocean,
it begins to dissolve.

Soon, there is no doll left
to report what it discovered.

The one who wanted to measure the ocean

What a strange little story.

We spend much of life trying to stand outside it.

We measure.

We compare.

We explain.

Am I happy enough?

Is this relationship working?

Am I becoming the person I should be?

What does this experience mean?

There is nothing wrong with these questions.

The mind measures because it wants to understand.

But some parts of life cannot be fully known from the shore.

Love must be entered.

Grief must be lived.

A difficult conversation must be met.

A child grows while we are still trying to understand parenthood.

A life passes while we are still deciding what it should mean.

And each experience changes the one who entered it.

The person who begins a relationship
is not quite the person who later understands it.

The person who enters loss
is not quite the person who emerges from it.

Even an ordinary day changes us quietly.

A conversation.

A disappointment.

A moment of kindness.

A silence we did not rush to fill.

We want to carry a clear answer back to shore.

But sometimes there is no answer separate from the living.

Awareness does not ask us to stop thinking.

It simply notices when we are observing life from a distance—

and when we are actually inside it.

Perhaps the ocean cannot be measured
without getting wet.

Perhaps life cannot be understood
without allowing it to touch us.

And perhaps, in certain moments,
the need to explain becomes quiet.

There is no observer standing apart.

No conclusion to carry home.

Only the ocean.

Only this life being lived.
