The Temptation to Find the Correct Point

The mind would prefer a number.
Tell me where the middle is.
How much should I work?
How much should I rest?
How much should I care?
How much should I let go?
How much should I speak?
How much should I tolerate?
How ambitious should I be?
How spiritual should I be?
Surely there must be a correct amount.
But the mind is trying to turn something alive into measurement.
Imagine asking:
How much should a tree bend in the wind?
There is no answer independent of the tree.
And the wind.
And the strength of the branches.
And the depth of the roots.
And this particular moment.
The answer exists only in the relationship between all of them.
So it is with us.
The Middle Way is not a mathematical midpoint.
It is not fifty percent of one thing and fifty percent of another.
Sometimes the Middle Way may look extreme from the outside.
A person may work intensely for several days because something genuinely requires it.
Then rest completely.
A person may speak strongly because silence has become fear.
Another may remain silent because speaking has become compulsion.
There is no universal outward appearance of balance.
Balance belongs to the whole situation.
